Jacobsen’s Re.Form programme: Turning offcuts into sustainable flooring solutions

At the end of August, the Jacobsen team came together for two Re.Form sorting days—a rewarding mix of team bonding, fun and laughter, all while helping our industry reduce construction waste. 

As part of Re.Form, our product stewardship programme, we work with our customers to actively divert construction waste from NZ landfills. We do this by collecting Jacobsen offcut and post-use flooring, which are then returned to our supplier manufacturers to be recycled into new flooring.  

This sorting session was our third since the inception of the programme and the biggest one so far. Our goal this time was to understand the total amount of each type of flooring returned and how close we are to being able to meet the minimum requirement for recycling—a full container load of a single type of flooring. Together, we sorted through 38 bags of vinyl and 45 bags of carpet tiles—preparing them for recycling by separating them into their different types and clearing out over three years’ worth of collections. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible! 

While sorting through these we realised something exciting, we're 80 percent of the way towards sending back our first full container of HO Vinyl to our manufacturer, Tarkett. Once it arrives, Tarkett will recycle the material back into flooring—a true example of a closed-loop system in action. We expect to hit that milestone early next year.
