2024 Residential Trend: Moody Coastal
Moody Coastal
In 2024/25 designers can expect to see the traditional whites, sand, bright blues and teals of Classic Coastal being replaced by the darker shades of the deep-sea emerald greens, stormy greys and almost black blues.
Perhaps emerging from the collective desire for safety, comfort and connection to the natural world, this trend is about designing spaces that are cosy and enveloping.
Organic, fluidlike shapes, marble and stone surfaces, exposed woods, plaster-look walls, heavy linens and metal finishings all bring this trend to life.
Embrace the use of deep, rich oceanic shades to design spaces that leave clients with the sensation of sheltering from the storms of life.
WGSN’s Social Data shows that mentions of dark blue grew by 21%, year over year from ’22-’23 across their innovator segment and WGSN & Coloro named ‘Future Dusk’, a colour that sits between dark blue and a shadowy purple, as the colour of the year.
Colour and Styling Considerations
Moody Colours
Emerald greens, almost black blues and stormy greys form the foundation of this colour palette. Instead of using whites and lighter colours to brighten the space carefully consider your use of lighting and softer toned furnishings.
Texture
Organic, fluidlike shapes, marble and stone surfaces, exposed woods, plaster-look walls, heavy linens and vintage metal finishings all bring this trend to life.
Vintage is Back
Instead of buying new pieces, wherever possible, upcycle and source vintage. Iron clawfoot bathtubs make the perfect feature piece for a bathroom while tired but plush furniture can be reupholstered for a more authentic, ocean-weathered feel.
