Building Product Information Regulation (BPIR): Changes to the New Zealand Building Regulations
Changes to the New Zealand Building Regulations
The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE) has made some changes that affect how building products, including flooring, can be sold in New Zealand. These updates aim to ensure consumers can access all the necessary details to make informed decisions.
Understanding these regulations will help businesses and consumers navigate the market more effectively, enhancing the quality and safety of available building products. In this article we explore these changes to NZ’s building regulations, what they mean, and who they impact.
Why are the NZ Building Regulations changing?
These changes aim to provide essential information to users of building products, helping them assess compliance with the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC).
The new regulations streamline building consent processes and provide your customers with comparative product information. Manufacturers, importers, retailers, and distributors of designated building products are all subject to these new obligations.
What do the new NZ Building Regulations mean?
The change requires that manufacturers and importers of building products in New Zealand to make specific information about their products publicly available, ideally online and in a user-friendly format.
This information should cover details like the product's intended use, product identifier, manufacturer's details, building code compliance, installation requirements, and any associated warnings or bans.
Do the changes affect you?
Manufacturers and importers must comply by providing and maintaining the required product information, while distributors and retailers must ensure this information is available to customers at the point of sale.
The goal is to enhance decision-making in building projects, reduce consent delays, and improve the overall quality and efficiency of construction work.
How we're solving this for you
We have created Jacobsen Product Information Declaration (JPID) sheets for all our flooring ranges. We’ve created these sheets to help our customers make the right product choice for their project with all the information needed to be compliant.
We've spent time with the council working through this regulation change to ensure the information is easy for the council to review during the consent process.
Jacobsen Product Information Declarations are available for all products on our website. Navigate to the product you need a declaration for; you'll see a "Download Declaration" next to the product swatch image. See an example on the Traffic 250 Flooring page.
How to implement it in your business
All businesses that sell Jacobsen products will need to have a URL or QR code available at their point of sale.
For Designers and Architects
Designers and architects can download the Jacobsen Product Information Declaration from our website or copy the product link and include it in the paperwork for their clients.
For Retailers
Retailers must have a URL or QR code on or near their samples and in-store displays. This URL or code will take you to the website to access the JPID.
For products already in the market without a QR code, we will send out a quick reference book with all our URLs and QR codes to make it as easy as possible for you to implement this change and comply with this new regulation. Going forward, all Jacobsen samples and swatch books will feature QR codes.
