Whananaki Beach Retreat

Whananaki Beach Retreat

Perched on the pristine coastline of Whananaki in Northland, this beach retreat exemplifies sustainable design, timeless style and architectural ingenuity.

Originally constructed from 20 German-engineered shipping containers, the structure was once a Mini Cooper garage on Ponsonby Road. It has since been transformed into a warm, welcoming sanctuary that reflects a deep connection to place and a commitment to thoughtful design.

The land was purchased by the homeowners, Alex and Corban, over a decade ago and the original structure was built by hand. The two-storey container building has been reimagined as two self-contained dwellings, accommodating up to 16 guests—ideal for extended family holidays or short-term rentals.

The most recent renovation was prompted by wear and tear, particularly on the timber floors, which were already second-hand when first installed. With a long-term vision in mind, the renovation focused on durability, longevity and aesthetic cohesion.

The design blends mid-century influences with modern sensibilities, using a palette of 70s-inspired tones, tactile materials and carefully curated furnishings. Brickwork played a central role in setting the tone for the interior, influencing choices from drapery to furniture.

Budget constraints required a phased approach to the renovation. While some elements were deferred, much of the work was completed in-house, allowing the project to stay aligned with the original vision.

The timber flooring was selected for its visual warmth and ability to enhance the scale of the open-plan living space. Its natural tones complement the overall design palette and contribute to the retreat’s cohesive aesthetic.

In the bedrooms, the Jacobsen Genesis carpet range in the colour ‘Eaves’ was selected for its environmental credentials and design appeal.

Made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon—derived from recycled materials such as old carpets and fishing nets—the carpet provides a textured loop pile finish that is both durable and stain-resistant, making it ideal for high-use areas

The heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, where cohesive design elements come together to create a harmonious and inviting space. The renovation reflects a collaborative effort, combining design vision with hands-on craftsmanship.
