Cork Flooring FAQ's

Are cork floors durable?

Yes, cork floors are highly durable and resilient. Cork naturally compresses and bounces back, making it resistant to wear and tear from foot traffic, dents and scratches. When properly sealed, cork flooring can last for many years while maintaining its comfort and appearance.

Where can cork floors be installed? Are they suitable for bathrooms?

Cork flooring is suitable for commercial applications such as offices, retail spaces, and hospitality areas. Its natural resilience, comfort underfoot and sound-insulating properties make it an excellent choice for environments where employees or customers spend lengthy periods on their feet.

However, cork is not generally recommended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms. While cork flooring can be sealed for water resistance, constant exposure to moisture may lead to warping over time. It’s better suited for dry areas where durability and comfort are key. For wet areas, alternative water-resistant flooring options like vinyl are recommended.

What are the benefits of cork floors?

Cork floors offer several advantages:

  • Comfort: Soft and cushioned underfoot, reducing strain on joints.
  • Insulation: Excellent thermal and sound insulation properties.
  • Sustainability: Made from renewable cork bark, harvested without harming the tree.
  • Hypoallergenic: Resistant to mould, mildew, and dust, making it ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • Durability: Naturally resilient and long-lasting with proper maintenance.
What can cork flooring be layed over? Does it need an underlayment?

Cork flooring can be installed over many types of subfloors, including concrete, plywood, or existing flooring. A smooth and level surface is necessary for installation. While cork flooring doesn't always require an underlayment, adding one can provide extra sound insulation and moisture protection, especially over concrete.

Can you refinish cork flooring?

Yes, cork flooring can be refinished, but it depends on the thickness of the top cork layer. You can lightly sand and apply a new coat of sealant or polyurethane to restore its appearance and durability. Refinishing helps extend the life of the cork floor, especially in high-traffic areas.

Can cork flooring be used outside? Does it fade in the sunlight?

Cork flooring is not typically recommended for outdoor use. Exposure to sunlight can cause cork to fade over time so it's best to avoid installing it in areas with direct sun exposure unless it's a UV-protected cork product. For outdoor applications, more durable, weather-resistant materials are preferable.

How long does cork flooring last?

With proper care and maintenance, cork flooring can last between 20 to 30 years or more. Regular sealing and protective finishes will help maintain its durability and extend its lifespan.

How do I clean and maintain cork floors?

Cork flooring is easy to maintain with the following steps:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.
  • Mop with a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Avoid using excessive water or harsh chemicals.
  • Reapply a sealant every few years to protect against moisture and wear.
How is cork flooring installed and how long does it take?

Cork flooring can be installed as floating floors or glued down. The process involves preparing the subfloor, cutting the cork planks or tiles to fit and either snapping them together or applying adhesive. Installation can take 1 to 3 days, depending on the size of the area and the type of cork floor.

Is cork flooring ecofriendly?

Yes, cork flooring is one of the most eco-friendly flooring options. Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees which regenerates after being stripped, allowing the tree to continue growing. Cork is a renewable resource and its production has minimal environmental impact, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious designers.
