Case Study: APL Hautapu

Project Background

APL, the country's largest manufacturer of aluminium windows and doors, embarked on a transformative endeavour in Hautapu, near Cambridge. They aimed to develop the 56.7-hectare industrial zone, emphasizing sustainability and innovative design. The project involved the Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic, and Environmental Services Design at the Hautapu Development Campus. Additionally, it encompassed services and environmental work associated with the Masterplan and future APL Campus. APL sought to create a second home for its staff, an inspirational workspace, and a benchmark for sustainable industrial development.

Design Considerations

The team at Jasmax were the creative minds behind the design of the APL Hautapu building. The design considered various factors, including acoustic considerations, materials, resources, and environmental impact. The objective was to create a space that maximized the use of natural energy, such as natural ventilation and lighting, while also accommodating the industrial processes within the building. Climate-based daylight modelling was employed to optimize the quality and quantity of daylight distribution throughout the space.

Design Inspiration

The design inspiration for the APL Hautapu project revolved around the concepts of being clean, green, and industrial. Rather than constructing an average warehouse, the aim was to create an architectural statement and a sustainable workplace with the highest quality finish. The project drew inspiration from the desire for transparency, simplicity of materials, and attention to detail demonstrated in the earlier APL Factory HQ, completed in 2015.

Sustainability

APL Hautapu is committed to achieving a Green Star rating, which signifies world-leading design, construction, operation, and fit-out that promotes a healthy environment for both people and the planet. The project incorporates numerous sustainability concepts, considerations, green features, and innovations. From energy-efficient façade design and low-carbon material selections to optimized lighting systems and water-sensitive design principles, the building sets a benchmark for sustainable industrial development in New Zealand.
