Lytton High Hall

Completed in 2024, the refurbishment of Te Hīnātore, the hall building at Lytton High School, was a significant project which transformed the hall into a versatile and inspiring venue for both Lytton High School and the broader Gisborne community.

Designed by Architects 44 in collaboration with artist Simon Lardelli and constructed by D Stevens Ltd, the refurbishment was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, with flooring installed by Modo Flooring. The upgraded hall is designed to accommodate school assemblies, performances, and community events.

The design concept for Te Hīnātore is deeply inspired by local narratives and the surrounding natural environment. Embodying its name, which means "the glimmer of light, the interior is a celebration of light, art and storytelling. The raised ceiling in the entrance foyer, paired with dark, moody walls and LED-lit trophy cabinets, creates an evocative transition into the main hall.

Local artist Simon Lardelli’s influence is prominent, with his mahi toi (artwork) and patterns adorning the walls, acoustic panels and window decals. The patterns narrate the journey of the morning light rising in the east, a theme mirrored in the carpet tiles and extending to the western end of the hall, where the Poutama pattern symbolises growth and aspiration.

Steel portals decorated with kōwhaiwhai patterns and a carved manu (bird) soaring above the hall add layers of cultural depth. These artistic elements are complemented by practical enhancements such as seismic upgrades, energy-efficient windows, and advanced acoustic treatments.

The chosen carpet tiles, supplied by Jacobsen, are perfectly in harmony with the interior. The hall features Carpets Inter Breaking Waves in Black Pearl and Grey Seal and Flatlands in Kedu (rich red). This combination not only offers a durable solution for a high-traffic area but also complements the hall's storytelling theme. The wave-like patterns of the carpet tiles symbolise waves, which align perfectly with Lardelli's wall designs that illustrate light moving over water.

The careful alignment of the carpet patterns with the wall designs highlights the interconnectedness of the hall's visual elements, enhancing the overall sense of flow and continuity. The carpets' neutral tones provide a balanced backdrop, allowing the artistic features and lighting to stand out prominently, while the red accents introduce warmth and energy to the space.

The refurbishment of Te Hīnātore at Lytton High School showcases the power of culturally inspired design and has successfully transformed the hall into a multi-functional space that is both practical and uplifting. The outcome is a facility that meets community needs and tells a story befitting its name – symbolising light, resilience, and growth.
