University of Auckland Medical Schools Park West

Architect: Jasmax Architects

The University of Auckland’s B507 Park West building was the next stage in the development of the Grafton Campus. This building also facilitated the transfer of the School of Population Health out of the Tamaki Campus when it was sold in 2019.

B507 Park West was conceptualised as two block volumes joined by a dynamic connection acting as an interface in between. Formal simplicity has been a key driver to meet the short project programme and the design inspiration for the block volumes was derived from two primary themes; exploring the role data plays in population health and from the surrounding context/urban fabric.

Public health as a subject area aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the population by initiating studies where the data gathered is used to positively inform and influence policy. The formal response to community/policy symbiosis is to divide the building into a series of volumes articulated by materiality/colours. The materials chosen clearly define boxes externally and boxes within boxes internally. Form definition enhances the sense of community while utilizing finishes that appear familiar and warm.
