A recent example of this collaboration is the installation of temporary flooring at Auckland Airport's international arrivals area, concepted and designed by GHD and constructed by Accent. As part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades, foot traffic needed to be diverted via a custom-built ramp made from shipping containers. Rather than defaulting to a low-cost, temporary solution that would end up in landfill, GHD and Auckland Airport worked with Jacobsen to deliver a more sustainable flooring solution.

In this project, 360 m² of flooring was installed across 8 x 40 ft and 5 x 20 ft containers, using a patchwork layout of vibrant carpet tiles, repurposed entirely from discontinued stock and unused samples. The result was a colourful and engaging walkway that served both a functional and aesthetic purpose, creating a welcoming experience for travellers in an otherwise utilitarian space.

The tiles used in this ramp were carefully sorted and installed to create an eye-catching design with purposeful colour transitions.

Once the ramp is decommissioned, the tiles will be recovered and recycled back into the manufacturing process, continuing the cycle of circularity.

Auckland Airport and GHD stakeholders were impressed with the result. As one team member remarked, “I was blown away by how great it looks. The colourful tiles really brighten the space and make it fun. The graphics team did a great job picking up on the colours in the carpet.”

Jacobsen's commitment to environmental leadership extends beyond product reuse. In 2019, the company set a bold target: a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. In 2024, they proudly achieved this milestone—five years ahead of schedule.

Through initiatives like Re.Form, Jacobsen are proving that sustainability in construction is not just possible but practical, scalable and visually impactful.
