Catherine McAuley Centre, Christchurch

Architect/Designer: Hamish Shaw Architects

The Catherine McAuley Centre is part of Villa Maria College in Riccarton and was purpose-built for the Sisters of Mercy to celebrate 100 years of delivering quality education for girls from Catholic families in and around Canterbury. This centre was the winner of the coveted Public Architecture award at the Canterbury Architecture award.

Different flooring and wall materials were used to differentiate the main spaces in the building. The worship side of the building was defined by Timber walls and Shaw Material Matters Vapour Carpet tile while the office spaces and mezzanine museum were contrasted with white walls and Tarkett Noble Plan timber floors. The toilet used Refin Deck ceramic tiles to allow for easy maintenance and durability.
