Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
The restoration of Wellington's Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart marked the end of a long and determined journey for its community. This highly technical and complex heritage project demanded immense care and sensitive judgment to preserve the integrity of the Category 1 landmark.
Led by Team Architects Wellington, in partnership with Paul Cummack Conservation, the project encompassed extensive seismic upgrades, moisture remediation and fabric repairs to reinforce the 123-year-old structure. Old paint was removed from the Oamaru stone, revealing its natural warmth, while interior spaces were rebalanced to honour both historic and contemporary liturgical practices. The aim was to create a bright, uplifting environment with the sanctuary as the central focus for Catholic worship.
The architectural vision aimed to revitalise the interior while celebrating the building’s heritage. Flooring was carefully selected to enhance the Cathedral’s renewed atmosphere of calm and dignity. The main carpet tile, Shaw Contract Community Exchange with EcoLogix cushion backing, features a subtle cross-inspired motif woven with fine gold accents. These details quietly reference ecclesiastical elements and complement the brass finishes throughout the interior.
The restrained palette sits confidently against the natural Oamaru stone and dark grey plinths, providing a strong base without drawing attention away from the sanctuary.
Equally important was the focus on sustainability. Given the interior footprint of 961 m², the selected carpet solution needed to support a circular economy approach, allowing for recycling and repurposing at the end of its lifecycle.
Large-format tiles add contrasting texture, while mosaics create richness, balancing the space’s grandeur with intricate details.
Practical performance needs were also met with tailored solutions. In high-traffic areas, complementary Pacific carpet tiles and Tarkett iQ Eminent provide durability and a cohesive appearance, preserving the building’s overall design intent. Safety measures are unobtrusively included with brass-finished stair nosing from Tredsafe that echoes the space’s liturgical detailing, and iQ Granit that delivers slip resistance in refurbished bathrooms.
The restored Sacred Heart Cathedral reopened in June 2024, offering a dignified and enduring renewal of Wellington’s Catholic heart.
The project has been recognised with multiple awards, including an NZIA Wellington Branch Architecture Award, two Merit Awards in the Property Council Awards for the Civic and Heritage Categories, and a Resene Colour Award, underscoring its success as a sensitive yet transformative heritage restoration.
