Russell McVeagh Wellington
A journey of connection and craft
Winner of the 2025 Shaw Contract Design Awards – Best of Region (Australia and New Zealand), Russell McVeagh’s Wellington workplace exemplifies design excellence, material integrity and collaboration at the highest level. Designed and delivered by Unispace, in association with Emma Hofmann, the project was recognised for its refined balance of sophistication, functionality and deep sense of connection to people and place.
Reflecting the firm's commitment to excellence, longevity, and care for its people and clients, Russell McVeagh has relocated to three contiguous floors in Wellington's NTT Tower (Levels 23–25). This new environment marks a strategic investment in both the firm's culture and future, creating a workplace designed to attract and retain talent while strengthening its presence in the capital.
Guided by three core principles—sophistication, desirability and groundedness—the design creates a premium yet inviting environment. Departing from the traditional austerity of legal workplaces, the interior blends refined residential elements and natural materials to offer a tactile, human-centred experience.
At the heart of the fit-out is a bespoke helical staircase, crafted from timber, polished plaster and rolled aged brass. This sculptural centrepiece connects all three levels, symbolising openness and equality within the firm.
The surrounding meeting spaces continue the theme of craftsmanship, featuring curved glazing and timber detailing that mirrors the sweeping form of the staircase.
A collaborative approach brought together several local artisans and designers:
· Studio Lucy McMillan – ceramic sculptures
· Matthew Kennedy, Interlink – salvaged timber features
· Henry Wilson, Studio Henry Wilson – handcrafted bronze sconces
· Yuka O’Shannesy, Public Record – curated gallery objects
· Jeremy Price, Rivet Fabricate – fabrication of the spiral stair
Each contribution adds depth and authenticity to the project, resulting in a cohesive interior that celebrates material honesty and craftsmanship.
Flooring played a central role in achieving the project's warmth and tactility. Supplied by Jacobsen, a combination of Shaw Contract carpet tiles and Tarkett vinyl products seamlessly balances aesthetics, performance and durability throughout all zones.
The Shaw Carpet Tile Process in Argan and Shaw Carpet Tile Community Flat Weave, colours Argan and Riad, were chosen for their elegant textural variation and soft, woven appearance. These products ground the workspaces in warmth and sophistication while supporting acoustic performance—a key consideration for focused legal work.
Complementing these, Tarkett iQ Granit and Granit SD (Static Dissipation) deliver resilience and hygiene in high-traffic and functional spaces. Together, the flooring palette grounds the design.
The new Russell McVeagh Wellington office is a thoughtfully crafted, people-focused environment that embodies the firm’s values and modern approach to legal practice. Through close collaboration among designers, craftspeople and suppliers like Jacobsen, the result is a space that balances sophistication and accessibility with durable materials and intentional design.
Featuring premium flooring solutions from Shaw Contract, the workplace sets a benchmark for future-focused professional interiors—a welcoming and inspiring destination for both clients and staff.
